People have many different roles that they play in a lifetime, and these roles can, and do, change. For instance, a mother may choose to "work" as a homemaker, or she may take a part time job for a while, or she might go to school while bringing up children, or she may work full time in a job. She may do all of those things at different times. She may volunteer for a church organization, or she may take part in community theatre, or she may be an artist who works in the middle of the night by commission! There was a time when most men expected to work for the same company most of their lives, slowly advance as they raised their families and bought a house, and then retire with a pension. Those days are gone. Most jobs do not have pensions, and most people will change careers at least five times in their lives, not to mention jobs! And for most families, one income is not enough for any level of comfort. Work is distinguished from "career" because many times our real mission in life is is not our career, and we may take many jobs before we are ready to make out mission our full time job. Or we might take jobs on an interim basis while trying to accomplish something else, like finishing graduate school. This category includes anything that is your focus, paid or unpaid, or in any stage of transition, including a start up, sole proprietorship business.
